Crip Art Workshop
Art Workshop 2024
Material: Paper, pencil, watercolour paint, pen, oil pastel
As part of my exhibition on Maintenance Tools of Body and City, I co-hosted an online Crip Art Workshop for disabled people and people with chronic pain and or illnesses with @busybeingdisabled. Each participant gathered a collection of maintenance tools, meaningful objects which they use to maintain their bodies.
We had a discussion about the tools, practices and rituals we all use to maintain our bodies with chronic pain and illnesses. Then, forming a still-life with their meaningful objects, the participants were invited to respond to three exercises in artistic experimentation. Continuous line observation, light and shade with three tones and simplification and abstraction through geometries and cut outs. After the warm up exercises, the participants were asked to think about how one can translate one’s experiences into an artistic technique: through colour choices, types of mark making, light and sound and feelings expressed into artworks. At the end we shared our artworks with one another and had conversations of experience sparked around them.
